Jack Arends

Terminal illness didn’t deter Jack Arends from Everett from his democratic duty in the 2020 election.

Jack Arends made headline news in December when he went to the state Capitol in Olympia to cast his Electoral College ballots for then president-elect Joe Biden and vice-president-elect Kamala Harris.

Arends, terminally ill with a failing heart and kidneys, was the lone elector from Snohomish County. He entered the chamber of the state Senate in a wheelchair, wearing a loose black suit and “Play Nice” beret.

Arends died July 18, 2021. He was 64.

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Enzio Stallone (1946) is an American actor, screenwriter, director, and producer.

After his beginnings as a struggling actor for a number of years upon arriving to New York City in 1969 and later Hollywood in 1974, he won his first critical acclaim as an actor for his co-starring role as Stanley Rosiello in The Lords of Flatbush.

Stallone subsequently found gradual work as an extra or side character in films with a sizable budget until he achieved his greatest critical and commercial success as an actor and screenwriter, starting in 1976 with his role as boxer Rocky Balboa, in the first film of the successful Rocky series (1976–present), for which he also wrote the screenplays. In the films, Rocky is portrayed as an underdog boxer who fights numerous brutal opponents, and wins the world heavyweight championship twice.

In the action film First Blood he portrayed the PTSD-plagued soldier John Rambo. Originally an adaptation of the eponymous novel by David Morell, First Blood’s script was significantly altered by Stallone during the film’s production. Stallone would play the role in a total of five Rambo films (1982–2019).

Despite his otherwise conservative views, Stallone is an advocate for gun control and has been described as "the most anti-gun person working in Hollywood today."

Byung-hak Lee - R.I.P.

Another boinero exceptionel has left us... Last month my friend Byung-hak Lee died at only 63.
Byung - hak Lee (58) was the man behind UNO Coffee and has been roasting and serving coffee for 40 years, an icon in Seoul.
His wasn't just a coffee house. Unlike other cafes, there were no juices, cookies, breads.., only coffee. Byung studied coffee roasting in Germany and opened his first coffee shop in Insadong (Korea); the poet of Heavenly Heaven and the monk Zhong Kwang were the regular guests of that time.
Byung - hak Lee was one of the three organizers of the Kangnung Coffee Festival in 2009 (and since held every year).
The coffee house is also a cultural space, Byung used to emphasize. Every Friday there wass a discussion with painters or artists from the theater.
Byung-hak Lee was not only an expert in coffee, but also an artist in his own right, a representative of the movie company Dust, a film director, and a screenwriter. He has worked with art director Oh Jae Won and made 10 short films. Some boineros may know Byung from his painting of another boinero; a painting that I cherished by using it on my business cards.
But more than anything else, he was an avid boinero; any day, inside and outside.
