Self portrait
Francesc Gimeno i Arasa (1858 - 1927 ) was a Catalan painter
and draftsman. In his artwork, above all, his self-portraits stand out, which
are in a place of honor in the history of the genre, along with Rembrandt, Van
Gogh and Munch. His self portraits are characterized by coarse and rough
textures.
The artist was marked by poverty, a surly character, with
few relations and acquaintances within artistic circles of the time. In
addition to the self-portraits, his works include landscapes and portraits of
people.
The writer Josep Pla gave him a Homenot, which presents
the artist as being primitive, had a marginal anarchic instinct and was a
creator outside the current culture.
His son Martin Gimeno and Massaguer was a painter,
sculptor and art critic.
