Just stumbled on the Beret Project and it just reminded me on how in most black townships in South Africa, beret is such a 'staple diet' of 'clevers' (streetwise, hip, jazzophile, leftist, intellectuals, artists, arterati, writers). It has been like that for decades. It was mostly jazz 'cats' that made it popular and it has been a classic fashion statement ever since. Every two years I get my self two black berets and put in it a washing washing machine at 60 degrees to make it fit snugly a la Dizzy Gillespie.
