Pettenfabriek Krukziener, Zutphen

Numerous years I have lived in the Dutch town of Zutphen, but little did I know that Zutphen was also the place of what must be the only Jewish beret factory in the country.
Pettenfabriek (cap factory) Krukziener was established in Zutphen in 1910, but before that the family Krukziener was already active in the textile sector in the town of Oldenzaal, further north in the country.
My own family, from Almelo, have very likely known the Krukzieners, as they too worked in the textile industry of the Twenthe region.
The company has a rich history, too long to relate here (but can be read here, in Dutch).
The company went out of business in 1970; mainly to the decline of wearing hats in general, as well because of family circumstances.

  1. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see a return of Dutch alpinopet? Such a shame they are gone.
