Just stumbled on the Beret Project and it just reminded me on how in most black townships in South Africa, beret is such a 'staple diet' of 'clevers' (streetwise,hip,jazzophile,leftist,intellectuals,artists,arterati,writers). It has been like that for decades. It was mostly jazz 'cats' that made it popular and it has been a classic fashion statement ever since. Every two years I get my self two black berets and put in it a washing washing machine at 60 degrees to make it fit snugly a la Dizzy Gillespie.
