Brokeback Mountain is a 2005 American romantic drama film
directed by Ang Lee and adapted from the 1997 short story by Annie Proulx. The
film depicts the complex emotional and sexual relationship between Ennis Del
Mar and Jack Twist in the American West from 1963 to 1983.
There are an awful lot of cowboy hats in the film, but, also one
beret – proudly worn by actor David Trimble. He plays the Basque who drives the
protagonists up and down the Mountain.
Beans are a returning topic in the film and Trimble famously
states: “It’s too early in the summer to be sick of beans”.
Needless to say, the film caused a lot of controversy in the
US, from conservative Christian groups, FOX and other media, talk show hosts
and theatre owners. However, the film ranks fifth among the highest-grossing
westerns (since 1979), and eighth among the highest-grossing romantic dramas
(since 1980).
