Khatol Mohammadzai, the highest-ranking woman in Afghanistan's air force and its first and only female parachutist, sits at home in her uniform and airforce decorations, 19th April 2002.
She was an air force veteran and a brigadier with 500 parachute jumps on her records when the Taliban took over Kabul in 1996. With the Taliban prohibiting women from working, she lost her job and was forced to take menial jobs to support her family. In 2002 however, she became the first female general in the Afghan National Army.
