Years ago, I first published a post on the Whistlers from Aas (here and here).
Last year, the film Les siffleurs d'Aas has been released, showing how this age old tradition from the Ossau Valley is kept alive. It is taught at a college in Laruns, for example and teachers, college students, amateurs, scientists, all enthusiasts, whistle and speak Gascon fluently. They form a family that integrates into the larger community of whistlers around the world. In the same way as the great anonymous creations, their tradition belongs to the intangible heritage of France, and partly founds its identity.
