(born Michel Maffrand in 1948) is a celebrated
French singer-songwriter, accordionist, and the artistic engine behind the
famous Occitan folk group, Nadau.
A former mathematics teacher until his retirement in 2006,
Maffrand has spent over five decades serving as a cultural guardian for the
Bearnese, Gascon, and broader Occitan linguistic heritage of Southern France.
Through storytelling, poetry, and traditional instruments, he stands as a modern troubadour who has helped revitalize a regional identity once suppressed by political centralization.
Michel Maffrand co-founded the band in 1974 under the initial name Los de Nadau. Acting as the primary composer, lyricist, and vocalist, his work seamlessly blends traditional acoustic arrangements with contemporary social narratives.
He composed "De cap tà l'immortèla" (1978), which grew to become the unofficial anthem of the Pyrenees region.
Maffrand frequently notes that his music aims to restore pride and dignity to rural farming populations whose ancestors were taught to feel ashamed of their native dialects.
