Cyber Warfare in the Netherlands

The Dutch Defence Force has a unit specialized in cyber warfare, which has recently come into the news. The unit is not just defensive, but able to strike out too.

This cartoon portrays my personal comic heroes Fokke & Sukke, attacking commander Ivanov, the assumed responsible Russian officer who downed the Malaysian passenger jet MH17 over Ukraine.

Ihumātao

The protest at Ihumātao aims to stop a housing development on stolen(?) Māori land in Auckland, close to a heritage site and historic reserve. 

The protest has been going on for the last 4 weeks and, although the preparation for building has been put to a halt, no solution is in sight as yet. 

A good number of berets among the protesters (of course), but not this policeman; I wonder where else in the world one finds a cop playing a guitar and singing in Māori for the protesters he is meant to keep at bay?

Samuel Johnson Woolf

Samuel Johnson Woolf, American painter, lithographer and illustrator, was born in New York City and named after the English essayist Samuel Johnson. 

He studied with Kenyon Cox and George de Forest Brush at the Art Students' League and the National Academy of Design in New York. In the First World War he worked in Europe as a frontline artist-correspondent for Time magazine. In this capacity he painted portraits of General John C Pershing, commanding general of the US forces, and French general Joseph Joffre among others. Other subjects of portraits by Woolf include Franklin D Roosevelt, Josef Stalin, Crown Prince Frederick William of Germany, GK Chesterton and Edgar Allen Poe. His portrait of Mark Twain was acquired for the Mark Twain House in Hartford, Connecticut through the efforts of Mrs Stiles Burpee in 1947.

Renowned for extracting confidences from his sitters as he worked, Woolf wrote several volumes of reminiscences including Drawn from Life (1932) and Hear I Am (1942).

WEEKLY SPECIAL: Boinas of the Basque & Navarese Autonomous Police

This week, a true collector's Special: two genuine boinas of the autonomous police forces of Navarre and the Basque Country. 

These are Boinas Elosegui berets in the best Super Lujo quality, made for the Ertzaintza (Basque Autonomous Police Force) and the for the Foral (Navarese Autonomous Police Force). Both are 13" (302mm) in their very own shade of red (which is not used on any other Elosegui beret) with embroidered blazon on the beret.

For the Ertzaintza, the blazon shows the shields of the three Basque provinces in Spain; for the Foral it shows the blazon of Navarre. Both berets state size 59 but are actually on the large side (and the Moroccan leather band can stretch up to size 61).

Beautiful berets that are not available anywhere else (unless you happen to be friends with the police force’s quartermaster). Both come in their own Boinas Elosegui boina box.
