I was questioning myself whether I really wanted to publish this post on Marine Le Pen, or not. The last association I’d like to make would be between berets and (present-day) nationalist, xenophobic politicians. Still, Marine Le Pen plays a role.
Marine Le Pen (1968) is a French politician and the
president of the Front National (FN), the extreme right wing and third-largest
political party in France. She is the youngest daughter of the French
politician Jean-Marie Le Pen, former president of the FN.
Part of the FN, or nationalist way of, thinking is cherishing
everything that is perceived to be a national symbol and that is of course
where the beret comes in; ‘béret’, not ‘béret Basque’!
Here we see Marine Le Pen visiting an event showcasing ‘Made in France’ goods, happily donning a beret for the occasion.
